Day 4: Williamsport to Williamsport, PA

No bears today! Today was a planned loop day- starting and finishing from our hotel in Williamsport with two riding options- a short 38 mile loop and a long 63 mile loop. That was until a flash flood warning for the afternoon resulted in just the short loop being supported. It was a good call as we have been pounded by rain for most of the afternoon and evening.

Jack and I set out at the leisurely hour of 7:30 AM (which is late by Anchor House ride standards). We got out of the city via a trail. Williamsport has a fantastic network of bike trails- this bike advocate is impressed. We came in on a trail yesterday, and the trail today took us close to the Susquehanna River, which was stunning to view in the morning.

The ride took us into the foothills east of Williamsport- farms and lovely countryside. As always in PA, there were plenty of good climbs. At the top of one of them we were welcomed by a sign at a local church.

Jack was a gamer despite waking up with "dead legs", a common ailment mid-week. He climbed well today, and as always had that Jack smile going.

A few of us tagged on some additional miles since the thunderstorms were still getting their act together. I added another 11 miles in the hills (to end the day with 50 miles), my friend Peter tagged on an additional 32, and our friend Joe Boyce must have done the short loop twice, coming in with a total of 72 miles. I'll need to add on another 13 miles somehow in the next few days to get to 500 miles, otherwise I'll have to issue a low mileage discount to all my donors!. Don't worry, no matter how many miles we ride, we always somehow replace those calories with highly nutritious beverages and food.

Below is a sweet poster made by the kids of Anchor House, thanking the riders for raising money for the House. Tonight was our annual Awards Banquet, where scholarship awards were given to current or past Anchor House young adults who are either enrolled in college or employed in their fields of interest, including Alexandria shown below who received the Doug McCune scholarship. We also heard the great news that so far we have raised over $460,000! The more we can raise the more kids Anchor House can reach out to and help.

At the Awards Banquet, ride participants were given awards based on milestone years participating in the ride (5, 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 year awards). Two riders received their 30th anniversary awards! That's 15,000 miles ridden on the Anchor House Ride, and a significant amount of fundraising. Amazing.

And below is a photo of the folks I've been riding with during the week. An awesome group.

Tomorrow will be a challenging day- 80 miles with over 4300 feet of climbing, and it will be a hot one. We will be start pedaling at 6:15 AM. Oy!
